Sclerotherapy Q & A

What is sclerotherapy?

Spider veins are dilated blood vessels that show through your skin, most commonly on your legs. They’re usually blue or red in color and are often branched in a way that resembles a spider’s web.

They’re often found behind your knees but can also occur in other areas of your legs. Some people experience swelling, or sensations of heaviness or fatigue in their legs in conjunction with spider veins.

Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive treatment option for addressing spider veins. Sclerotherapy works by injecting a special solution called a sclerosant directly into the affected blood vessels.

This solution causes your body to react with an inflammatory response, which deprives the vessel of blood and lymphatic fluid. The blood vessel shrinks and eventually collapses, finally turning into scar tissue over a period of a few weeks.

Once this process is complete, the veins are no longer visible through the surface of your skin.

Is sclerotherapy a safe treatment option?

Sclerotherapy has a long history as a safe and effective treatment option for addressing spider veins. The procedure is not nearly as invasive as surgery, and there’s no need for anesthesia.

Side effects are rare, but when they do occur, they include a small area of bruising, redness, and pain near the injection site.

More serious, yet rare side effects include a risk of blood clots and air bubbles in your bloodstream. A small number of people experience an allergic reaction to the sclerotherapy solution.

The team at Forever Young discusses these risks with you prior to your treatment and can advise you on how to decrease your risk of side effects.

What is the sclerotherapy procedure like?

During your appointment, your provider cleans the treatment area before using a sterile syringe to inject the solution into targeted veins. You may feel a pinch or a slight burning sensation during the injections, but the procedure is not painful.

Once the injections are complete, the area may need to be massaged to ensure that blood is not flowing back into the treated veins. You’ll usually need to wear a special bandage or compression stockings for a period of time following your treatment.

It’s important to avoid exposure to sunlight immediately after sclerotherapy, and aerobic exercise is also not advised for a few days after your appointment.

Sclerotherapy is a relatively simple procedure and does not require a great deal of preparation, but be sure to discuss any medications you take with your provider before your procedure.
